"Thanks to all our friends around the world for your generous support to rebuild the Thame Valley, my home town. Hopefully by winter the Thame families will have proper shelter. Thank you, our community highly appreciates your support."
Lakpa Rita Sherpa shared the above sentiments after recently returning from Nepal where your generous donations were given directly to each of the families in Thame affected by last April's devastating earthquake.
In the village of Thame, a ceremonial gathering was held by the local community on October 17th, 2015. It was attended by hundreds of people from the region. In all $76,500 (almost 8 million rupees) was distributed to 228 families. The money came at an important time as they are tirelessly trying to complete the rebuilding of their homes before the winter months arrive. Your generosity will help these families in achieving their goals.
We want to thank Lakpa for volunteering to travel to Nepal and compete this challenging task. As with all international charities where different languages and customs are held, it is imperative to have a person closely tied to these communities to oversee the process.
Work continues on our project of rebuilding the school in Thame. We are working with other agencies committed to this endeavor by pooling together resources, skills and willpower to make sure the children of Thame have a new school. Currently, several designs have been drawn by a team of Swiss architects funded by the Thame Heritage Fund. These plans include earthquake resistant construction along with innovative designs to maximize the schools solar efficiency along with a dormitory for children living remotely. Our goal is to move one of these plans forward with construction to begin at the end of winter. We will keep you informed as the project progresses.
Again, a huge thank you to all of you for your substantial support for raising funds as well as awareness to the needs of the Nepali people. Their country has seen many hardships throughout the years and your dedication to the betterment of the lives of the children has not gone unnoticed. We all at the Alpine Ascents Foundation thank you.
